How to Use Your Dukes of Hazzard Horn to the Fullest on the Road

If you own a Dukes of Hazzard horn, you probably treasure it a little bit more than any other piece of Dukes of Hazzard memorabilia in your collection. Despite how much you want to show it off, there’s a right and a wrong way to do it.

Believe it or not, horn honking manners are important on the road. Whether you have a Dukes of Hazzard horn or not, here’s an intro course on proper horn honking etiquette that you should be following.

Promote Safe Driving
While you shouldn’t blare your horn just for kicks, there are actually appropriate times to use it on the road. One of the most important things to remember is there’s a difference between a short beep to alert others and a blaring, 10-second honk. For example, if a car at a red light isn’t paying attention and the light turns green, wait a few seconds and only after, give a short beep to alert them to the light.

Don’t Honk When You’re Mad
Contrary to popular belief, the car horn wasn’t invented as a means to take out your anger on other drivers. A lot of road rage incidents actually start when someone lays on the horn to express frustration at another driver. If another driver is consistently putting other drivers in danger, take down their license place number, pull over, and alert the police.

Don’t Honk at Friends
While a horn is a means of communication, you shouldn’t be using it to say hello to friends on the highway. A car horn is supposed to alert drivers to potential safety hazards, and honking without a safety concern could end up causing more trouble.

Don’t Honk in Traffic
Traffic is frustrating, sometimes excruciatingly so. However, that doesn’t mean its an excuse to lay on the car horn. No matter the cause of the traffic jam, honking won’t clear it!

If you’re a little shaky on car horn etiquette but still want to express support for the hit show that ran seven seasons from 1979 to 1985, you should try buying Dukes of Hazzard action figures, Dukes of Hazzard t shirts, or even a diecast 1:18 scale General Lee. Don’t abuse your car horn on the road, even if it is as cool as a Dukes of Hazzard horn.
